David Nelson was elected to the Alaska State Legislature in November 2020 and represents Muldoon, Creekside Park and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
He spent his youth in Sanford, Florida, with his parents and two sisters. His father is an ordained pastor and has served the Lord in churches from the Bahamas to Nappanee, Indiana. David achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America in December 2012.
Nelson, 24, moved to Alaska in 2015 to attend the University of Alaska Anchorage, graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, and at the same time commissioned through the U.S. Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC). He joined the Alaska Army National Guard as a Second Lieutenant and serves as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Officer for the 1-207th Aviation Battalion on JBER. In the spring of 2020, he put his CBRN credentials to work as part of his unit’s response to the COVID-19 emergency.
Nelson learned the importance of community service as a scout and serves as President of the Mid-Town Rotary Club of Anchorage and volunteers at Bean’s Café on weekends when he is in Anchorage. He also enjoys camping and backpacking and embarks on an annual 35-mile single day backpacking trip.
